"Loss isn't the question. What you do next is."

Six quick picks first, then your reading

On the card

A tumultuous card-- lots of spilled cups and a lack of connection. This card signifies struggle and loss.

Upright
LossGriefRegretMoving On

A major setback has occurred. Grieve for what you lost (maybe a relationship, a part of yourself, or a loved one). It's okay to be sad-- this card calls us to honor that sadness. It was a big deal and it's okay that you're hurting. Give yourself time to heal.

Reversed

In a dark time, you found a path through to the light. Slowly you found yourself again and that inner strength is like a candle in the dark. You can navigate this situation.

Cups are the suit of Water: feeling and attachment. A Cups card is always, underneath, about what you feel and who you are attached to.
NumberFive
The numbers tell a story inside each suit, from a seed at the Ace to the full expression at Ten. Five is the break: the structure fails and something is genuinely lost.

Five of Cups for Sagittarius in Work and Career

The Seeker

Cups are the water suit, so the Five of Cups sits in Cancer. Cancer and Sagittarius are quincunx, two signs with nothing in common: no shared element, mode, or polarity. This card will not slot neatly into how Sagittarius already operates. What it wants is this: say the feeling to the person it is about. It has to be done deliberately or it will not happen. Upright, the loss is happening rather than being feared, which is the harder and simpler thing.

When reading about work through a Sagittarius lens, the Five of Cups says that you feel like work is the place you prove you can master something fast, a stepping stone to the thing you actually want, and the point at which comfort starts to feel like a cage. This has either led you to build real expertise in one thing or to have a resume full of chapters with no book. You have not asked yourself what you actually want from this work, only what you think you should want from it. The Sagittarius blind spot in it is the specific weight of a single commitment, the slowness of actually building something, the possibility that it might not be enough.

In practice that can look like a resentment that has to be said out loud. Whatever form it takes, it is breaking, and the loss in it is real.
