"Hardship isn't the question. What you do next is."
Six quick picks first, then your reading
Two beggars in a snow-storm pass a richly lighted window. Pentacles represents wealth and the five card represents a challenge. The five of pentacles represents a financial loss, or scarcity mindset.
Look closer.
This card foretells a financial hard time; perhaps a car breakdown or unexpected expense will come up. Maybe your job feels unstable or your partner might be losing their job. It can also mean something is causing scarcity mindset in terms of romantic or platonic relationships (it can hint at infidelity). You feel like you might become destitute (financially or emotionally). Try to not give energy to your fears of loss, and lean on your community to get through a tough time.
You have reversed a poor financial decision and made a comeback-- having to make do with less has taught you a lesson (perhaps who you can lean on or how strong you actually are)
Older decks just showed five coins. Pamela Colman Smith, who drew this 1909 deck, was among the first to paint a full scene for every card.

Five of Pentacles for Pisces in Work and Career
The Dreamer
Pentacles are the earth suit, so the Five of Pentacles sits in Capricorn. Capricorn sextiles Pisces, which is help that has to be taken up rather than help that arrives. What it asks for is this: change one concrete arrangement this week. Pisces is perfectly capable of that, which is exactly why not doing it needs a better excuse. Upright, the loss is happening rather than being feared, which is the harder and simpler thing.
When reading about work through a Pisces lens, the Five of Pentacles says that you feel like work is where you prove your value through knowing what everyone else needs before they do, a place where your own tasks blur into managing the room's emotions, and somewhere you can disappear into usefulness. This has either led to you burning out quietly while everyone else thrives on your labor, or to you becoming so essential that staying feels like the only way to matter. You have not asked yourself what you actually want from this work, only what you think you should want from it. The Pisces blind spot in it is the moment they have to stop being useful and admit they're drowning.
In practice that can look like a promotion that is really more work. Whatever form it takes, it is breaking, and the loss in it is real.
