"Loss isn't the question. What you do next is."

Six quick picks first, then your reading

On the card

A tumultuous card-- lots of spilled cups and a lack of connection. This card signifies struggle and loss.

Upright
LossGriefRegretMoving On

A major setback has occurred. Grieve for what you lost (maybe a relationship, a part of yourself, or a loved one). It's okay to be sad-- this card calls us to honor that sadness. It was a big deal and it's okay that you're hurting. Give yourself time to heal.

Reversed

In a dark time, you found a path through to the light. Slowly you found yourself again and that inner strength is like a candle in the dark. You can navigate this situation.

Minor ArcanaNumber card
One of the 56 Minor Arcana. They are about what is happening in ordinary life right now. Each belongs to one of four suits, numbered Ace to Ten, plus four court cards.
SuitCups ยท Water
Cups are the suit of Water: feeling and attachment. A Cups card is always, underneath, about what you feel and who you are attached to.
NumberFive
The numbers tell a story inside each suit, from a seed at the Ace to the full expression at Ten. Five is the break: the structure fails and something is genuinely lost.

Five of Cups for Cancer in The Future

The Nurturer

Cups are the water suit, so the Five of Cups sits in Cancer. That makes this Cancer's own card, so nothing in it is being read from the outside, and the flattering interpretation is the one to distrust. What it asks for is the thing Cancer already believes it is good at: say the feeling to the person it is about. Upright, the loss is happening rather than being feared, which is the harder and simpler thing.

When reading about what comes next through a Cancer lens, the Five of Cups says that you feel like the future is a home you are building in your mind, it should feel like a place you belong (or like a place that wants you), and you are afraid it will not come. This has either kept you planning endlessly without moving, or given you the patience to build something real. You already know what comes next, and you are afraid of what it will cost you to get there. The Cancer blind spot in it is being seen as a burden, or as someone whose needs are too much.

In practice that can look like wanting something you had stopped admitting to, or a place that feels like home. Whatever form it takes, it is breaking, and the loss in it is real.
