Card lore

Older decks just showed five coins. Pamela Colman Smith, who drew this 1909 deck, was among the first to paint a full scene for every card.

Its place in the deck.

Minor ArcanaNumber card
One of the 56 Minor Arcana. They are about what is happening in ordinary life right now. Each belongs to one of four suits, numbered Ace to Ten, plus four court cards.
SuitPentacles · Earth
Pentacles are the suit of Earth: matter and time. A Pentacles card is always, underneath, about the body, the money, the calendar, the actual physical situation.
NumberFive
The numbers tell a story inside each suit, from a seed at the Ace to the full expression at Ten. Five is the break: the structure fails and something is genuinely lost.

Reading it: Mercury in Taurus: your thoughts stuck on your body and what you have. The card shows where that loop goes if you keep feeding it.

Five of Pentacles for Libra

The Harmonizer

Libra is an Air cardinal sign ruled by Venus, whose natural subject is partnership, contracts, the other person, open enemies. Pentacles are the earth suit, so the Five of Pentacles sits in Capricorn. Capricorn squares Libra, so the card asks for the move Libra is least fluent in: change one concrete arrangement this week. The friction is the content, not an obstacle to it. Libra is cardinal: it starts things, and this card is in the middle, which is the part cardinal signs are worst at staying for. The card points at a material fact where the sign is built to think about it. The fact does not need more thinking. Upright, the loss is happening rather than being feared, which is the harder and simpler thing.
