Three of Wands tarot card

"Expansion isn't the question. What you do next is."

Six quick picks first, then your reading

On the card

A calm, stately personage, with his back turned, looking from a cliff's edge at ships passing over the sea. Three staves are planted in the ground, and he leans slightly on one of them. Wands represent passion and three represents community. Together this card represents building a community of supporters and finding people who share your passions.

Upright
ExpansionForesightProgressExploration

You started a new hobby or new business recently and you are growing a community around that. You are building something with others and sharing the load. Triangles are strong structural supports and you building out foundational friendships and relationships that will serve you for a long time and bear the load of your future goals.

Reversed

You are having trouble connecting with people-- perhaps you are being rigid in your beliefs and vision for the future. Community involves some sacrifice for the shared dream. Perhaps you are just simply not with the people you need to be with. Don't bend when it comes to your true morals and values, but don't let your passions prevent you from connecting with your loved ones. Find common ground and mutual respect.

Three of Wands for Cancer in Work and Career

The Nurturer

Wands are the fire suit, so the Three of Wands sits in Aries. Aries squares Cancer, so the card asks for the move Cancer is least fluent in: spend the energy on one thing today. The friction is the content, not an obstacle to it. Upright, it has become visible to other people, which is the part that makes it real.

When reading about work through a Cancer lens, the Three of Wands says that you feel like work is where you prove you are worth keeping around, a place where showing up matters (or where being essential protects you from being let go), and something that should eventually feel like belonging. This has either made you stay in jobs that do not pay you what you are worth, or helped you find a workplace that actually treats you like family. You have not asked yourself what you actually want from this work, only what you think you should want from it. The Cancer blind spot in it is being seen as a burden, or as someone whose needs are too much.

In practice that can look like energy coming back for something. Whatever form it takes, it is about to become visible to other people.
